FAQs

The questionswe get asked

The things people ring up about before they bring a car down. If yours is not here, ring Paul on 0419 372 206 and ask him straight.

01
Do you only work on classic cars?
No. The shop is named for the restoration work and that is a big part of it, but a good half of the reviews are ordinary servicing and repairs on modern cars, utes and daily drivers. A Honda gets the same attention as a Mustang.
02
What is a full car inspection prior to purchase?
You are about to buy a car and you want somebody who has been looking at cars for forty years to go over it before you do, not after. It is on Paul’s own list of services. Bring it down or tell him where it is.
03
Can you fit power steering to a car that never had it?
Power steering conversions are on his own list of what the shop does. One of the Google reviews is a 67 Camaro that went through for exactly that, and the owner’s summary is that the car is so easy to drive now.
04
Can you upgrade the brakes on an old car?
Brake upgrades are the first thing on his own list. It is also the thing most worth doing on an old car that has had anything done to the engine, because a car that has been made to go faster has to be made to stop.
05
Do you do rust repairs?
Yes, and it is on his own list. The honest part of the answer is that on an old car the rust you can see is usually the smaller half of it, so what gets quoted is what is found once the panel comes off, not what was guessed from the driveway.
06
Can you put a bigger engine in it?
Engine conversions are on his own list. Two of the cars in his own photographs are running blowers with the drive standing up through the bonnet, so the ceiling is higher than a straight swap.
07
Do you take on a full restoration?
Yes. His own photographs show cars at every stage of one: a shell stripped back with the floor pan bare and new deadening laid in, a rat rod up on the four post hoist, a body in primer with the driveline already fitted, and a finished car sitting in the sun.
08
Can you quote over the phone?
A rough steer, yes. A real number needs eyes on the car, because on an old one what is actually wrong is normally a layer under what looks wrong. Ring and describe it, or email a photo, and you will get a straight answer about whether it is worth bringing down.
09
Do I have to leave the car with you?
For anything past a service, usually. One reviewer had money trouble part way through a job on a Falcon, was let keep the car at the shop until it was paid off, and was never charged storage for it. That is one review, not our promise, but it says something about how the place runs.
10
Where are you, and when are you open?
5 Riverside Ave, Werribee VIC 3030, in Melbourne's west. Open Monday to Friday, 8am to 5pm. By appointment on weekends. Ring before you drive down so Paul is off the tools when you get there.
